Classes resuming at Dalhousie and Chinook Park – June 11, 2021. Classes at the Barn are still on hold.

There are still some guidelines the Dojo’s will be following which include:

  1. Students will be distanced from each other at 2 meters distance
  2. When possible please wear your mask entering and exiting the Dojo, students may still wear a wear in class if they want.
  3. Enhanced hygiene, cleaning and sanitation measures in the dojo should still continue
  4. Please bring a COVID-19 WAIVER completed to every class for contract tracing,
    (One waiver per family is acceptable)
  5. Programs for participants who are not yet of age for vaccine eligibility (11&U) should be run with additional preventative
    measures such as:
  • Additional limits on group sizes
  • Limiting
    activities that involve frequent or reoccurring close contact (ie. sparring)
  • Consideration for activities can be done outside

ASK Dojo’s Reopening for Indoor Training October 2020

Arriving at Training:

The ASK has been monitoring the COVID-19 situation and are happy to announce that indoor training will start again in October 2020. There are so major changes that will be coming up and we ask everyone to be patient and understanding as the Dojo’s reopen.

We are happy to have three ASK Dojo’s that will be running in October, please pay specific attention to the date and times for each.

Dalhouse Dojo – Classes Starting October 1, 2020 (5432 Dalhart Rd NW, Calgary, AB)
Tuesday – 6:00pm – 7:00pm
Thursday – 7:00pm – 8:00pm

Chinook Park – Classes Starting October 2, 2020 (1015 73 Ave SW, Calgary, AB)
Friday – 7:30 – 8:30pm in the Gym
Sunday – 1:00 – 2:00pm in the Multipurpose Room (THIS TIME COULD CHANGE in the near future)

Waza-Ari – Classes Starting October 5, 2020 (224 Shawmeadows Road SW Calgary, AB)
Monday – 5:30- 6:15pm
Wednesday – 5:30 – 6:15pm (The Intermediate class will not be starting till Nov)

Effective January 1, 2021 – there will be a price change.
Students 12 and younger – $200 / 3 months training
Students 12 – 18 – $220 / 3 months training
Students over 18 – $240 / 3 months training

It is required you review the COVID-19 Policy, this will be developing as guidelines change from the government and Alberta Health Services.

Association of Shotokan Karate COVID Guidelines – 2020 Phase 2

The ASK will be reopening indoor training in Calgary October 1, 2020 and in order to proceed with a safe training environment the following COVID Policy will be in place. We are taking extra precautions to make sure individuals are able to train in a healthy and safe space.

Students will need to complete the ASK Checklist for COVID-19 every week in order to enter the dojo. These must be signed by a parent of a minor or a student who is over 18 years old.

Arriving at Training:

  1. Students must wear a mask into the building and into the dojo’s. They are not required during training.
  2. All students are encouraged to remain respectful of the personal space of others.
  3. Please stay in your respective area in the dojo (some facilities might have taped sections for you to remain in).
  4. Parents are asked not to stay unless necessary for the student to help minimize interaction and space capacity.

After Training:

  1. No Loitering.
  2. Wear your mask to exit the dojo and the facility.
  3. Thoroughly wash any materials brought to class including water bottles, clothing, equipment and gi’s.

18th Annual ASK Summer Camp, Aug 9-11

The Association of Shotokan Karate invites you to attend our 18th Annual Summer Karate Camp, August 9-11, 2019.

Location:  Calgary Jewish Academy, 6700 Kootenay St SW

Please park in the lot at the back of the Beth Tzedec Synagogue at 1325 Glenmore Trail SW.  Click here for map.  A security person will be there whenever we are, and will let us in and out.

Dates / times:  Click here for schedule.

What to bring:  Kumite gear, Runners, A change of clothes for Sunday, small every day items foe Self-defence training, water and lunch for Saturday.  Please note that Adult Self Defence Training is also open to parents or anyone interested in attending.

Registration:  Please speak with Kyra or Sensei Kristie for pre-registration, or bring cash or cheque made out to A S Karate Council Alberta.

Full Weekend- ASK members  $60.00
Full Weekend- non Ask members $75.00
One day – $35.00

Kyra will be taking orders for camp t-shirts at the camp.

Friday, Aug 9th we will be setting up mats starting at 5:30 pm. We need volunteers please!  We will be leaving the mats in place until we are finished on Sunday August 11th.  Volunteers please to help with this before we go out to celebrate!

6th Annual Calgary Open Shotokan Cup – 2019

Announcing the 6th Annual Calgary Open Shotokan Cup!

Karate-ka under 21 from all styles and belt levels are encouraged to compete and test their skills at this fun, youth-oriented tournament.

Volunteers will be needed for set up at 8 am Saturday morning and for teardown at 3 pm Saturday afternoon.  Volunteers are also required for table officials and marshalling.  Please contact Kristie Schafer at askaratecouncilalberta@gmail.com to volunteer or express your interest on the day of the tournament.

5th Annual ASK Christmas Bowling Party!

All ASK (Banzai and Waza-ari) students and immediate family are invited to come out for a fun night of 5-pin bowling, pizza, and annual award presentations!

17th Annual ASK Summer Karate Camp

Thank you to all the organizers, volunteers, participants, and instructors who made the 17th Annual ASK Summer Camp a success.

In addition, a very special thank you to Harris and Kyra Hanson who not only provided the venue for training but also opened up their home to the barbeque and amazing buffet after.  The bouncy house and warm waterslide was a real hit with the kids!

The Association of Shotokan Karate invites you to attend our 17th Annual Summer Karate Camp featuring karate seminars by Sensei Mike Scales (7th Dan, Coquitlam, BC) and ASK Instructors Senseis Chris Walker, Kristie Schafer, and Marc Ward.  There will also be self-defense class (by Sensei Marc) and a yoga class that can be attended by parents or family members.

Location:  8900 Macleod Trail SE (old Swiss Chalet building)

The deadline for t-shirt order is July 20.  Note that participants registering after July 20 will not receive a t-shirt.  Registrations will be accepted up until the day of the camp.  Due to the costs associated with the event, registrations will be non-refundable after Aug 3.
